Il nome stesso è un attacco non certamente velato al prodotto commerciale di Symantec: Free Open Ghost.
Il software è giovane, ma già piuttosto funzionale. Il pannello di controllo di Fog è accessibile tramite browser mentre tutte le operazioni con i client vengono effettuate ( in maniera automatizzata ) tramite PXE ( non occorre alcun bootdisk).
Fog attualmente supporta solo sistemi operativi Windows XP - Windows Vista, Un'altra limitazione: la possibilità di clonare, creare immagini di backup / restore solo su sistemi operativi con un’unica partizione. Ma siamo sicuri che stanno già lavorando per superare queste piccole limitazioni.
Fog, programma gratuito alternativo a Norton Ghost, download di circa 26 Mbyte, non certo leggero, occorre una Adsl.

Fog is a basic computer imaging solution for Windows XP and Vista that ties together a few open-source tools with a php-based web interface. Fog doesn't use any boot disks, or CDs; everything is done via TFTP and PXE. Fog also supports putting an image that came from a computer with a 80GB partition onto a machine with a 40GB hard drive as long as the data is less than 40GB.
Fog also includes a graphical Windows service that is used to change the hostname of the PC, restart the computer if a task is created for it, and auto import hosts into the FOG database. In the future this service will also install printers, do simple snap-ins, do timed shutdown/reboot, and take inventory of the desktop.
